Undetermined Liberty
There are times when the
alternative possibilities that are generated in the first stage of a
two-stage model include a small number that are
adequately determined, by the agent's reasons, motives, and desires, but which evaluation and
de-liberation does not select one of them as best.
In this case, the agent may select at random from among the group of alternatives, all of which are acceptable, and still take
responsibility for the decision.
We call this an
undetermined liberty, because the particular choice was not determined by anything prior to the moment of choice itself.
